The Fellow - Enrico Sassoni
Enrico Sassoni, born in 1982, received his PhD in Materials Engineering in 2011 from the University of Bologna, Italy. After working at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Princeton University (USA) for 18 months and at the Department of Structural Geology and Geodynamics at the University of Goettingen (Germany) for 6 months as a visiting Postdoctoral Research Associate, Dr. Sassoni is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) at the University of Bologna (Italy). Since 2017 he holds the Italian national qualification as Associate Professor in “Materials Science and Technology”.
His main research topics are: mechanisms of stone deterioration and innovative materials for stone consolidation and protection; methods for characterization of historic mortar and masonry; sustainable natural fibre-based composites for the building sector.
He has authored or co-authored 83 scientific papers: 48 articles in peer-reviewed international journals with IF, 1 book chapter and 34 contributions in conference proceedings. His important role in the research activity that led to these publications is evidenced by the fact that he is the first author in 39 papers and the corresponding author in 49 papers. The impact of his publications indexed in Scopus (51 up to May 2020) is documented by a total of 1054 citations in Scopus since 2011 (h index = 20).
Dr. Sassoni was awarded a 244'000 € grant by successfully submitting as "Experienced Researcher" the project proposal “HAP4MARBLE” (Multi-functionalization of hydroxyapatite for the restoration and preventive conservation of marble artworks), that was selected for funding by the European Commission within the call H2020-MSCA-IF-2014 of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Score: 94.8/100; Project duration: 36 months).
He has received several awards and prizes:
- The Gustavo Colonnetti medal for 2017, awarded by RILEM to researchers of less than 35 years, who have made an outstanding scientific contribution to the field of construction materials and structures.
- "Best Paper Award" in the Materials Science section at "Heri-Tech" (Florence, IT, 16-18 May 2018), with the wotk entitled "Photocatalytic hydroxyapatite-titania nanocomposites for preventive conservation of marble".
- "Best Poster Award" at the "13th Int. Cong. on Deterioration and Conservation of Stone" (held in Paisley, UK, 6-10 September 2016) with his poster entitled "Consolidation of sugaring marble by hydroxyapatite: some recent developments on producing and treating decayed samples"
